Dr. Luc Van Bockstal gained its first experience in the 90’s whilst developing research equipment for strong magnetic fields. He then contributed to the foundations of large magnet facilities in Europe and the US.
Since more than 20 years, he is the Technical Director of Metis Instruments. The company is focusing on delivering state of the art magnetizing and magnetic measurement equipment. Today he is here to talk about one of their measurement systems are characterizing magnet material. In particular, this presentation will be on permanent magnets and the tools to measure their EC losses.


Measuring EC losses in Permanent Magnets

AC losses in permanent magnets are becoming an important topic as these magnets are increasingly being used in rotating machines. To guarantee their performance, not only BH curves are relevant, but also the AC loss due to ripple fields needs to be properly characterized.

AC loss is largely due to eddy currents. To characterize this surface effect, we propose a single performance indicator: the delay time for the penetration of the magnetic field. This parameter can be used to easily predict the performance of the magnet.
