Challenges to Build an American REE Supply Chain

Building an American rare earth elements (REE) supply chain faces significant challenges due to China's market dominance and uncertainty over long term demand. Chinese producers from mine to magnets benefit from economies of scale, lower environmental regulations, and government subsidies, making it challenging for Western companies to compete. There are strict restrictions on part of the Chinese government on export of any rare earth technology to outside China, making it impossible for even Chinese companies to invest or collaborate with foreign companies.

Moreover, technological evolution in motors, particularly for electric vehicles (EVs) and renewable energy applications, is reshaping the demand for specific REEs. Alternative motor technologies could marginalize traditional REE applications, leaving investments at risk of obsolescence as companies hesitate to invest in mining, refining, and processing due to uncertain future demand patterns influenced by rapid technological change.
