Critical Materials for Permanent Magnets: Innovations Amidst Competing Priorities

The accelerated pace of technological advancement necessitates the need for developing high- performance permanent magnets, which are crucial for achieving net-zero emissions and advancing clean energy technologies. These magnets contain critical materials that are indispensable in applications such as electric vehicles, wind power generators, consumer electronics, medical devices, aerospace components, and defense equipment. This panel discussion will examine the multifaceted challenges and opportunities associated with these materials, with a particular focus on accelerating innovation amidst competing priorities in view of the drive towards net-zero, and the development of clean energy solutions.


Panelists will discuss several critical factors, and their influence on the sustainable supply of rare earth permanent magnets. The discussion will address competing priorities such as balancing supply chain security with cost efficiency, producing metals for high-performance magnets while minimizing environmental impact, ensuring rapid technological innovation while allowing sufficient time for market deployment, adhering to regulations while maintaining the flexibility to innovate, and balancing resource allocation between new technology development and improving existing technologies.
